Job Summary

The Golf Grounds Superintendent oversees all functions and operations of the golf grounds. The employee prepares an array of chemicals to include fertilizers, pesticides, herbicides, and insecticides to aid in optimal turf conditions.  The employee develops and administers budgets, performs purchasing duties, and performs human resources duties for the efficient and effective operation of the golf grounds. The employee distributes assignments, provides instruction, and offers guidance to ensure duties are performed accurately. This job is considered safety-sensitive and is subject to a pre-employment background check and random drug screenings.

Essential Functions

 ESSENTIAL FUNCTION: Supervision. Provides oversight of employees to include planning priorities, assigning duties, and providing guidance to ensure efficient and effective operations.

  1. Acts as a point of reference for inquiries and questions relating to the golf course grounds.
  2. Plans, assigns, and supervises work of subordinates in the care, maintenance, and operation of a municipal golf course.
  3. Supervises and performs the mowing, watering, weeding, rolling, spiking, and fertilization of greens, tees, and fairways.
  4. Supervises the propagation of grass and other plants.
  5. Suggests methods for and supervises the control of fungus, weeds, and rodents.
  6. Reviews all timesheets /timecards and corrects, if necessary, prior to submitting to City Human Resources (HR).
  7. Participates in annual written performance reviews of employees.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTION: Turf Management. Prepares, applies, and provides direction of herbicides and pesticides, analyzes turf conditions, and operates irrigation system to ensure optimal conditions.

  1. Directs the use of fungicides, pesticides, and insecticides for control of disease and insects that are harmful to grass and other plants.
  2. Reviews, develops plans, and participates in the construction and development of greens, tees, and fairways.
  3. Estimates and requisitions materials, supplies, and equipment needed in the maintenance and operation of the golf course and related facilities.
  4. Analyzes soil and turf conditions and devises formulas to correct unhealthy conditions.
  5. Develops policies and procedures, rules, and regulations for the operation of the golf course.
  6. Prepares and mixes fertilizes and herbicides.
  7. Applies fertilizers, fungicides, pesticides, and insecticides for control of disease and insects that are harmful to grass and other plants.
  8. Inspects irrigation system to ensure optimal operation.
  9. Troubleshoots irrigation system if problems exist; refers to guidelines and manuals for assistance.

 ESSENTIAL FUNCTION: Golf Grounds Maintenance. Oversees the maintenance of golf grounds to include ensuring that grass is cut, branches and limbs are trimmed, debris is picked up and the safe operation of various equipment for the maintenance of greens according to the City’s standards and policies and procedures.

  1. Ensures all scheduled and preventive maintenance associated with golf course is performed.
  2. Ensures fairways and all adjacent golf course property is properly maintained.
  3. Operates various types of lawn mowers such as zero turn, fairway unit, and greens mower for cutting the greens to ensure proper trimming and maintenance.
  4. Operates small equipment such as a hedge trimmer, chain saw, and limb saw in order to trim bushes, shrubs, and tree limbs.
  5. Ensures preventive and light maintenance and repairs on equipment to include checking oil and fluids, changing belts, and sharpening and changing blades is performed efficiently and in a timely fashion.
  6. Oversees the maintenance and repairs of the golf carts.
  7. Ensures maintenance such as picking up excess pine straw, pinecones, leaves, and weeds is performed in a timely fashion.
  8. Ensures trimming, cutting, and weed eating is effectively and efficiently performed for safety, function, and aesthetic purposes.
  9. Ensures cups and flags are in proper location and in fair condition.
  10. Ensures fairways, greens, and bunkers are maintained to include raking and picking up and removing debris.
  11. Ensures grass, trees, shrubs, or flowers are planted according to instructions and planned design of landscaped area.
  12. Ensures mulch and pine straw are applied to designated areas.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTION: Building Maintenance. Oversees the maintenance of buildings on the golf course grounds to assist with the efficient and effective operations of the golf course facilities.

  1. Ovrsees preventative and light maintenance of facilities and buildings.
  2. Ensures buildings are cleaned and windows are washed utilizing brooms and other cleaning supplies.
  3. Ensures minor repairs of buildings and facilities are completed safely and in a timely manner.
  4. Ensures the golf course and facilities are free of debris and trash; assists and supports the Mechanic, when necessary.
  5. Collaborates with Public Works and the Electric Department to ensure safety and that all building maintenance and repairs are completed in a timely manner.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTION: Department Administration. Performs administrative duties, assists patrons, and routine maintenance checks to ensure efficient and effective operations.

  1. Develops and manages the budget to ensure proper allocation and distribution of funds.
  2. Requisitions and orders parts, supplies, and equipment through requisitions.
  3. Drives to purchase materials and supplies.
  4. Reviews and checks invoices for accuracy prior to submitting to accounts payable.
  5. Operates power driven machinery such as a lawn mower, rotary reel mower, hydraulic reel mower, tractors, and other precision equipment.
  6. Performs routine maintenance checks on all equipment and golf carts daily.
  7. Performs administrative tasks such as record keeping and filing to ensure accuracy and proper documentation.
  8. Performs customer service to include responding to requests and inquiries; handles complaints from golfers.

NON-ESSENTIAL FUNCTION:

Minimum Qualifications

  1. Possess an associate’s degree in Turf Grass Management or Agronomy or in a related field from an accredited college or university.
  2. Minimum of three (3) years of professional work experience in turf grass management and practices.
  3. Possess a certification in pesticide use and application.
  4. Possess a current and valid driver’s license; must be insurable.
  5. Ability to work overtime and non-standard work hours.
  6. Ability to pass a pre-employment background check and an initial drug screen.

Physical Demands

The work requires some physical exertion such as long periods of standing; walking over rough, uneven, or rocky surfaces; recurring bending, crouching, stooping, stretching, reaching or similar activities; recurring lifting moderately heavy items such as record boxes.  The work may require specific, but common, physical characteristics and abilities such as above-average agility and dexterity.

Work Environment

The work involves moderate risks or discomforts which require special safety precautions, e.g., working around moving parts, carts, or machines; with contagious diseases or irritant chemicals, etc.  Employees may be required to use protective clothing or gear such as masks, gowns, coats, boots, goggles, gloves, or shields.

Course Info

    Bent Brook is a single owner 27 hole daily fee golf course. With  A.U.Victory Bent grass greens, zoysia collars and 419 fairways, tees and rough. We have recently just finished up a greens and bunker renovation We are currently reassessing and reconfiguring the golf course and the role trees play on it. We have removed 2000+ trees and are finishing up a 4 hole renovation we started in 2020. We will be hosting the Alabama Men’s State AM in 2022 for the third time since 2004.

Job description: Assistant Golf Course Superintendent 

      I am looking to fill 2 positions for Assistant Superintendent. Ideally candidates will have the ultimate goal of becoming Head Golf Course Superintendents. 

      Duties are to assist the superintendent in all areas of golf course maintenanance, focusing on the golf course and managing the crew in the day to day operations.This will include training new employees. You will learn to work with the equipment techs and learn the mechanics of what it takes to keep a crew moving. You will be immersed into the greens spray program. This includes assisting with and learning our herbicide, pest management, and all chemical and fertilizer applications in detail. You will gain knowledge and understanding of the products we use and why. This includes when to use what product, safe handling, product management, record keeping, safety protocols, and proper calibrations of spreaders and sprayers. This will all be under direct supervision of the Superintendent. 

      As the assistant, you will dive into the budget aspects of turf management along with equipment forecasting.You will learn how to put together a budget and forecast for the next year as well as 3 and 5 year plans. 

     Our goal for you is that you will become a Head Superintendent and be well equipped for the next adventure in your career.

Turf degree or equivalent certificate.

Duties:  Typical Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Supervises and participates in the application and recording of chemical applications (fertilizers and pesticides) on the golf course grounds in compliance with all local, state, and federal regulations.
  • Works closely with, advises, and coordinates with the Golf Course Manager/Shop Staff on any issues related to golf course maintenance.
  • Reports to Golf Course Owner.
  • Monitors expenditures against budget; prepares budget data for review/approval by supervisor/department head.

Requirements:  2–4-year degree in Turfgrass Management or Agronomics preferred

Job Related Skills: Knowledge of management and maintenance of greens, fairways and roughs. Knowledge of use and operating standards of equipment and tools used in golf course construction and maintenance work. Interpersonal skill to resolve conflict and work with supervisors, employees, members and the general public. Knowledge of safe use, mixing and application of chemicals and commercial products. Knowledge of the game of golf, golf rules and methods of play.

Experience: 3-5 years’ experience as a Golf Course Superintendent or Assistant Superintendent.
